What is it?
A temporal artery ultrasound is a specialist examination used to assess for inflammation of the temporal arteries, a condition known as giant cell arteritis (GCA) or temporal arteritis.
The temporal arteries are blood vessels that run just beneath the skin at the temples on either side of the head. In giant cell arteritis, these arteries become inflamed, which can cause headaches, scalp tenderness, jaw discomfort and, in some cases, visual problems.
Ultrasound is a non-invasive method of assessing the temporal arteries and can often identify characteristic features of inflammation without the need for more invasive testing.
What will it assess?
Arterial blood flow
Flow direction, velocity + areas of reduced or abnormal flow
Temporal arteries
Common superficial temporal artery, frontal + parietal branches
Arterial inflammation
Wall thickening, halo sign, vessel narrowing + reduced blood flow
Additional large vessels
Axillary arteries and features of widespread large-vessel inflammation
