What is it?

When might a child need an ultrasound?

A paediatric ultrasound may be recommended by your doctor to investigate a range of symptoms or clinical concerns. Common reasons for referral include:

  • Abdominal or pelvic pain

  • Suspected kidney or urinary tract problems

  • Testicular pain or swelling

  • Neck lumps or swelling

  • Soft tissue lumps or swelling

  • Suspected organ enlargement or abnormal findings on examination

Ultrasound is often used as a first-line imaging test in children because it is safe, painless, and does not involve radiation.

Referral requirements

All paediatric ultrasound examinations require a referral from a qualified healthcare professional.

Referrals are accepted from:

  • General Practitioners (GPs)

  • Paediatricians

Important:
Please do not book a paediatric ultrasound appointment without a valid referral. We are unable to proceed with the examination without appropriate clinical referral documentation.

If you are unsure whether your referral is suitable, please contact the clinic before booking and our team will be happy to advise.
