Female scans

Abdomen + pelvis ultrasound

What is it?

An abdominal and pelvic ultrasound is a safe scan that creates detailed, real-time images of the abdominal and pelvic organs using high-frequency sound waves. The pelvic assessment may be performed by scanning across the lower abdomen (transabdominal ultrasound) or by internal imaging using a small vaginal probe (transvaginal ultrasound). The most suitable approach will be discussed with you before the examination.

Who is it for?

A female abdominal and pelvic ultrasound is suitable for adults experiencing unexplained abdominal, urinary, or gynaecological symptoms, or for those who have been advised to undergo imaging by a healthcare professional.

This examination is commonly used to investigate a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Fatty liver disease, cirrhosis and other chronic liver conditions

  • Gallstones

  • Kidney and bladder problems

  • Fibroids

  • Ovarian cysts

  • Endometriosis

  • Abnormalities of the womb lining (endometrium).

It can also help identify more significant underlying abnormalities, including ovarian, uterine, abdominal, or pelvic tumours.

What will it assess?

This combined examination provides a comprehensive assessment of the major abdominal and pelvic organs, including the:

  • Liver

  • Gallbladder

  • Kidneys

  • Pancreas

  • Spleen

  • Bladder

  • Uterus

  • Ovaries

Who performs it?

Scans are performed by consultant radiologists or experienced sonographers who specialise in abdominal and gynaecological imaging.

A chaperone will be present throughout the examination.

How do I prepare?

You will need to avoid eating for 6 hours before your appointment. This helps reduce bowel gas and ensures the gallbladder is properly assessed.

You will also need a comfortably full bladder to allow proper assessment of the bladder and pelvic structures. Please drink plenty of water before your appointment and avoid emptying your bladder until after the first part of the scan has been completed.

If you are diabetic or unable to fast, please contact the clinic before your appointment so alternative arrangements can be discussed.
