What is it?
An abdominal aorta ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan that creates detailed, real-time images of the abdominal aorta using high-frequency sound waves. The scan is used to assess the size and appearance of the abdominal aorta and to check for significant enlargement, known as an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
Who is it for?
An abdominal aorta ultrasound is suitable for adults who wish to screen for abdominal aortic aneurysm, monitor a known aneurysm or who have been advised to undergo imaging by a healthcare professional.
What will it assess?
This examination assesses the diameter of the abdominal aorta and checks for any enlargement (abdominal aortic aneurysm) that may require monitoring or onward referral to a vascular specialist.
Who performs it?
Scans are performed by consultant radiologists or experienced sonographers who specialise in abdominal imaging.
A chaperone will be present throughout the examination.
