What is it?
An early pregnancy and viability scan is a safe ultrasound examination that confirms the presence and location of a pregnancy and assesses early fetal development. The scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed, real-time images.
This examination is performed from 7 weeks of pregnancy, when early fetal development can first be well assessed.
The scan may be performed either across the abdomen or using a small internal vaginal probe, which can obtain clearer detail in early pregnancy. The most suitable approach will always be discussed with you first.
Who is it for?
This scan is suitable for individuals in early pregnancy who wish to confirm pregnancy viability or who are experiencing symptoms such as pain or bleeding.
It may also be performed for reassurance following previous pregnancy complications or fertility treatment.
What will it assess?
This examination assesses:
Confirmation of a pregnancy within the uterus
Assessment for fetal heartbeat and viability
Estimation of gestational age
Number of embryos present
Who performs it?
Scans are performed by experienced sonographers who specialise in obstetric imaging.
A chaperone will be present throughout the examination.
