Foot ultrasound

What is it?

A foot ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive examination that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed, real-time images of the tendons, ligaments and soft tissues of the foot.


Ultrasound is particularly effective for assessing the soft tissues of the heel and sole of the foot and identifying common soft tissue causes of foot pain.

Who is it for?

This scan is suitable for individuals with a recent injury or experiencing:



  • Foot or heel pain

  • Pain when walking or running

  • Swelling in the foot

  • Pain in the sole of the foot


Foot ultrasound is commonly requested by physiotherapists, GPs and other healthcare professionals to help guide treatment and rehabilitation.

What will it assess?

This examination assesses:


  • Tendons and ligaments of the foot

  • Soft tissues of the heel and sole of the foot

  • Fluid or swelling within the soft tissues of the foot

Who performs it?

Scans are performed by consultant musculoskeletal radiologists.

A chaperone will be present throughout the examination.
