What is it?
A hernia ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan that creates detailed, real-time images of the abdominal wall and groin using high-frequency sound waves. Hernias occur when there is a weakness in the abdominal wall that allows internal tissues or bowel to protrude. The examination is often performed dynamically, meaning images may be taken while you cough, strain, or change position to help identify a hernia more clearly.
Who is it for?
A hernia ultrasound is suitable for adults experiencing a lump, swelling, discomfort, or pain in the groin, abdominal wall, or near a previous surgical scar.
This examination is commonly used to investigate:
Suspected groin hernias (inguinal or femoral hernias)
Abdominal wall hernias
Hernias around the belly button (umbilical or paraumbilical hernias)
Hernias related to previous surgery (incisional hernias)
Unexplained groin or abdominal wall pain
What will it assess?
This examination provides assessment of:
The abdominal wall or groin regions
The presence of a hernia or abdominal wall defect
The contents of the hernia, if present
Changes in the hernia during movement, coughing, or straining
Who performs it?
Scans are performed by consultant musculoskeletal radiologists or experienced sonographers who specialise in hernia ultrasound imaging.
A chaperone will be present throughout the examination.
