Hernias occur when there is a weakness in the abdominal wall that allows internal tissues or bowel to protrude. The examination is often performed dynamically, meaning images may be taken while you cough, strain, or change position to help identify a hernia more clearly.

A hernia ultrasound is suitable for adults experiencing a lump, swelling, discomfort, or pain in the groin, abdominal wall, or near a previous surgical scar.
This examination is commonly used to investigate:
