What is it?
An abnormal lump ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan that creates detailed, real-time images of lumps or swellings using high-frequency sound waves.
Who is it for?
An abnormal lump ultrasound is suitable for adults who have noticed a new lump, swelling, change in an existing lump, or who have been advised to undergo imaging by a healthcare professional.
What will it assess?
The scan will assess the size and location of the lump. It can identify common benign lumps, such as:
Cysts
Lipomas
Haematomas
Normal lymph nodes
It can also detect sinister lumps with worrying features which would require onward referral to a specialist.
Who performs it?
Scans are performed by specialist consultant musculoskeletal radiologists.
A chaperone will be present throughout the examination.
