What is it?
A neck ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan that creates detailed, real-time images of the soft tissues of the neck using high-frequency sound waves.
It is commonly used to investigate lumps, swelling and enlarged glands, and to assess structures such as the thyroid gland, salivary glands and lymph nodes.
Who is it for?
A neck ultrasound is suitable for adults who have noticed a lump or swelling in the neck, have persistent swollen glands, have abnormal thyroid function tests, or have been advised to undergo imaging by a healthcare professional.
It is routinely performed to investigate common neck concerns such as:
Thyroid nodules or thyroid enlargement
Enlarged or persistent lymph nodes
Salivary gland swelling or stones
It can also help identify more serious abnormalities, such as concerning lymph nodes, that may require further investigation.
What will it assess?
A neck ultrasound examines the key soft tissue structures of the neck, including the:
Thyroid gland
Lymph nodes
Salivary glands
Neck soft tissue lumps and swellings
Who performs it?
Scans are performed by Consultant Head and Neck Radiologists who specialise in neck imaging.
A chaperone will be present throughout the examination
