What is it?
A pelvic ultrasound is a safe ultrasound examination that creates detailed, real-time images of the uterus, ovaries and surrounding pelvic structures using high-frequency sound waves. Pelvic ultrasound may be performed by scanning across the lower abdomen (transabdominal ultrasound) or by internal imaging using a small probe placed into the vagina (transvaginal ultrasound). The most suitable approach will be discussed with you before the examination.
Who is it for?
A female pelvic ultrasound is suitable for adults with unexplained pelvic pain, abnormal or irregular menstrual bleeding, bloating, fertility concerns, or other suspected ovarian or uterine conditions.
It is routinely performed to investigate common gynaecological conditions such as:
Fibroids
Ovarian cysts
Endometriosis
Abnormal thickening of the womb lining (endometrium),
The scan can also help identify more serious abnormalities such as ovarian or uterine tumours.
What will it assess?
A pelvic ultrasound focuses on the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding pelvic structures.
The uterus is examined to evaluate its shape and structure, the appearance of the womb lining, and to identify fibroids or other structural abnormalities.
The ovaries are assessed for cysts, masses, or other structural changes. The scan can also detect fluid or other abnormalities within the pelvis that may help explain your symptoms.
Who performs it?
Scans are performed by experienced sonographers with specialist expertise in gynaecological imaging.
A chaperone will be present throughout the examination.

How do I prepare?
Pelvic ultrasound preparation depends on the type of imaging required. In many cases, both transabdominal and transvaginal imaging may be recommended to provide the most complete assessment.
Transabdominal Ultrasound
For imaging performed across the lower abdomen, you will need a comfortably full bladder, as this helps improve image quality. You will be asked to drink plenty of water before your appointment and avoid emptying your bladder until after the scan has begun.
Transvaginal Ultrasound
For internal imaging using a vaginal probe, a full bladder is not required. You will usually be asked to empty your bladder before this part of the examination.
Transvaginal scanning provides more detailed images of the uterus and ovaries and is commonly recommended, but it is only performed with your consent. You are free to decline this part of the examination at any time.
