Renal tract ultrasound

What is it?

A renal tract ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan that creates detailed, real-time images of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder using high-frequency sound waves. It is commonly used to investigate urinary symptoms, flank pain, or abnormal kidney function tests.

Who is it for?

A renal tract ultrasound is suitable for adults who are experiencing urinary symptoms, have abnormal kidney function tests or for those who have been advised to undergo imaging by a healthcare professional.

It is routinely performed to investigate common urinary tract problems such as

  • Flank or lower abdominal pain

  • Blood in the urine (haematuria)

  • Suspected kidney or bladder stones

  • Recurrent kidney infections

  • Difficulty in emptying the bladder

It can also identify more serious abnormalities such as kidney or bladder tumours.

What will it assess?

A renal tract ultrasound focuses on the:

  • Kidneys

  • Ureters

  • Bladder

Who performs it?

Scans are performed by consultant radiologists or experienced sonographers who specialise in urinary tract ultrasound imaging.

A chaperone will be present throughout the examination.

How do I prepare?

For a renal tract ultrasound, you will need a comfortably full bladder, as this helps improve image quality and allows assessment of bladder emptying.

You will be asked to drink plenty of water before your appointment and avoid emptying your bladder until after the first part of the scan has been completed.

Will I need a referral?
