Testes ultrasound

What is it?

A testicular (scrotal) ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan that creates detailed, real-time images of the testicles and surrounding structures using high-frequency sound waves. The scan provides assessment of the testicles, epididymis, and surrounding tissues.

Who is it for?

A testicular ultrasound is suitable for adults experiencing symptoms affecting the testicles or scrotum, or for those who have been advised to undergo imaging by a healthcare professional.

It is commonly performed to investigate:

  • Testicular lumps or swelling

  • Testicular or scrotal pain

  • Suspected infection or inflammation

  • Swollen veins (varicocele) or fluid around the testicles (hydrocele)

  • Trauma to the testicles

  • Fertility concerns

  • Monitoring known testicular or scrotal abnormalities

The scan can also help identify more serious underlying abnormalities, including testicular tumours.

What will it assess?

This examination provides a detailed assessment of:

  • Testicles

  • Epididymis

  • Surrounding scrotal tissues

Who performs it?

Scans are performed by consultant radiologists or experienced sonographers who specialise in urological and abdominal ultrasound imaging ultrasound.
