What is it?

A fetal gender and wellbeing scan is a safe ultrasound examination performed during pregnancy to assess fetal development and determine fetal sex*. The scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed, real-time images.

This examination is typically performed from 16 weeks of pregnancy, when fetal sex can usually be assessed reliably.

*If you would prefer the gender to remain a surprise, we can discreetly write the result down for you to open later or use for a gender reveal

Perfect for:

Seeing your baby’s movements

Checking your baby’s growth and wellbeing

Planning a gender reveal

Finding out whether you’re having a boy or girl

Those 16 weeks or more into their pregnancy

Reassurance as your pregnancy progresses

Please note:

This service is designed to complement routine NHS antenatal care and screening. It does not replace NHS anomaly scans or emergency maternity assessment.

If you experience concerning symptoms, including reduced fetal movements, you should contact your midwife, maternity unit or emergency services immediately.

Testimonials from our patients

Beautiful clinic, friendly staff and immediate results.

My scan really helped put my mind at ease after some worrying symptoms. I voiced my concerns and they got me in immediately for a scan and then went through the results clearly with me in the same appointment.

I like that it wasn't rushed at all and they make sure you understand everything and even send you your results after.

My visit to Cardiff Ultrasound Clinic was everything I hoped for from start to finish.

I was looked after by staff extremely well by the friendly, professional and polite staff. Every care was taken to make sure I was comfortable, informed and ultimately reassured. In depth verbal and visual feedback of my conditions were explained in detail and I was encouraged to ask as many questions as I needed.

The clinic itself is immaculate and comfortable and I couldn't have been more happy with my overall experience. Thank you!!!

Examinations are delivered in a calm, unhurried clinical environment.

  • All examinations are performed by consultant radiologists or highly experienced specialist sonographers. See our team

Scans are carried out by clinicians working within their area of specialist practice. For example, abdominal and hepatobiliary scans are performed by radiologists specialising in gastrointestinal imaging, while musculoskeletal scans are performed by clinicians experienced in MSK imaging.

This specialist-led approach helps ensure focused expertise, accuracy and high-quality reporting.

  • Findings are explained during your appointment following the scan, allowing you to leave with a clear understanding of the results.

You will also receive a follow-up digital report, including high-resolution images, within 24 hours.
